Application Process

Who can apply for the Housing Grant?

The application process is open to all Fredericksburg Police Department Officers and officer candidates with a final offer of employment who qualify based on a demonstrated need. There are two ways for officers to qualify for a housing grant: (1) financial need based on household income or (2) special circumstances (regardless of income). A financial need is defined as spending more than 30% of household gross income on a monthly mortgage payment.

What does the application process entail?

The officer or candidate must complete the Housing Grant application, and return it, via email, to the Fredericksburg Police Department Foundation Fund’s Fund Advisor. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis so they may be submitted at any time. Upon receipt of the application, the Fund Advisor will verify standing with the Lieutenant on staff who oversees the applicant’s division. The application will then be forwarded to the Chief of Police, the City Manager of Fredericksburg, and the Community Foundation C.E.O. Once the application has been reviewed and all necessary information has been received, a decision will be made to approve or reject the application.

When will grants be dispersed?

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis so they may be submitted at any time. If the application is approved, the Fund Advisor willl send the applicant an award letter stating the amount of the grant. As soon as practicable, the officer and the Fredericksburg Police Department Foundation Fund shall enter into a Housing Grant Assistance Agreement. The Agreement must be fully executed prior to grant payment. Grant payment shall be paid directly to the closing attorney, closing company or other appropriate party as determined by the Chief of Police, the City Manager of Fredericksburg, and the Community Foundation C.E.O. In turn, the Fund Advisor will work closely with the applicant and his/her real estate agent, mortgage broker and/or lender to complete any necessary paperwork or documentation in order to effectuate the grant in a timely fashion for the home closing.
